Quick Note Before Work

Sonic Gems Collection for GameCube: UBER. ROCK.

Only took a brief look at it last night before bed, and most impressive thing so far?

In this re-release of SonicCD, they've gone back to the original animation clips they did way back when, and did a new high quality, full screen compression to take advantage of GameCube hardware as opposed to emulating SEGA-CD's comparatively pathetic quarter-screen 256 color capability.

(Of course Todd's going nuts over the inclusion of the Game Gear Game, Tails Adventure, but to each his own =)

Sonic The Fighters is pretty neat. Todd's more into it than me since he's like this supremo fighting game master. The graphics leave something to be desired, but then it looks like an exact port from the arcade hardware so many of the characters have a lot of sharp edges. Any screenshots you may have seen from the arcade should be interpreted as being how it looks on the GameCube as well. The controls are pretty smooth, but the difficulty spikes pretty quickly. The first guy is always a breeze, and even I can score perfect victories, but then by the third guy you're begging for mercy. (I just wish I knew where Amy keeps that hammer...)

As for SonicCD, it wouldn't surprise me. The clip they used is the clip in the opening of the PC version. This game, however is smooth, and beatuiful, and the trasitions between stages and times are quick as well. The problem the PC version had was it was pasted together somewhat piss-poorly by SEGA's VERY short lived PC division. CD access wasn't anywhere near optimized, and they used inferior video codecs for the videos. This version is a major improvement.
